XP Pro logon to domain problem

I have a new XP Pro machine that I am attaching to a Server 2003 domain ... I
can see the server (ping) even access the internet, but cannot get shared
resources.
I have a hunch it may be in the user setup, but I cannot find a thing out of
the ordinary. With the user set (I think), I try to add a new network place.
Easy as pie right? But when I enter the correct \\server\share address I
receive "folder you entered does not appear to be valid ..." error message.
I have deleted and re-added the user in the active directory several times
which is why I think it may have more to do with the local XP Pro machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Laura
