False network cable unplugged error on resume from standby / hiber

My PC goes into standby and/or hibernate about 5 or 6 times a day and
occasionally (about once a day) when it resumes, it gets a false LAN
connection error "Network cable is unplugged". Sometimes the LAN connection
is still alive so I can still access the net and sometimes it's
deader-n-a-doornail, i.e. no green light on the router. Either way, once
this happens, the system gets slower and slower (error recovery loosing it's
mind?) and the only recovery is to reboot, which is a pain in the b**t. BTW,
the system will not shutdown so my only option is to force power off and
power back on.

The connection will not disable from "Network Connections" although if I do
this, the connection is disabled following boot and has to be manually
enabled (which it does just fine). Physically unplugging and replugging the
cable does not affect the situation.

I'm running SP2 with all the latest updates and my h/w is a new Dell 4700
(which I'm VERY happy with) with an Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
(driver version 7.1.12.0 ... the wizard claims this is the latest). The
router is a Linksys Broadband RT32P2 (Vonage).

Any thoughts on what might be going on here?
