VPN Connection Can't get past password.

I run windows XPPro SP1.
I have successfully used a VPN connection for a number of years mapped to a
shared drive on a remote server.
I now need to map to another drive on the network. I have added the ip
number into the hosts file, but when I attempt to map the new drive, I get
a password request, despite the fact that I am already logged onto the
network.
When I re-enter the same logon/password as I use to get to the server it
wan't map, but prefixes my login with my [computer name] & \ and represents
the password screen.

The administrator on the remote site assures me there is no special
security, and my logon/password works when they test it out locally.

The site is on a different Continent so its a bit difficult to go and sort
it out on site.

Any one have any ideas - I'm not a VPN (or networking) guru!

TIA

Ian B
