Internet connection sharing with modem.

Okay well this is tough thing to talk about and I probably don't even know
what I'm talking about but here it goes. My friends have SBC yahoo! and for
some reason they were both able to be online on a game and use the browser. I
don't know how it was split, possibly by sharing. But they were connected by
a LAN cable.(this is in one house with two comps). Well we tried to fix the
lan after cause we couldn't see our shared files and disconnect internet
cables and stuff. And then it didn't work. So i'm wondering if there is way
to share the connection like this, or it was a freak accident.
