Correct

No, I am using bootitng images, I have the different OS's on a
seperate partition.

Right
FWIW I even used my XP HE CD and did an install just to see if that
would work - no joy.
Anyway I'll be setting up an XP Small Business Server 2003 here
shortly, mainly for my own knowledge [as well as use] so this issue
with XP Pro, whilst annoying will not enter the equation [hopefully] as I
will have a domain.
That is, when I learn to configure it !!.
I have another question, for you :
With regards the XP Pro Upgrade CD, I am sure it is possible to use
this type of CD to preform a fresh install of XP Pro on a system
without an OS. During the initial set up proceess you will asked to
provide as complying product [eg Win98SE], put that CD in the drive,
once verified the installation will continue.
I rang Microsoft to verify this but was told by a support person
this is not correct, and there needs to be a base OS in place
already for the XP install to build on.
Have you had any personal experience going the upgrade that with XP,
if so is it possible to preform a clean install with the upgrade CD.
