Repair, revert, or Registry editing to repair messed up networking.

Hi,
In setting up the wireless net on my new HTPC I had a steep learning curve to overcome along with two different Mfg's software that used different terms for the same thing and when I said to use Windows XP software only, both interfered with it.
I now understand how to set my HTPC and Laptop for both wired and wireless networking and have both working and fire walled, but I now cannot get the HTPC External Modem to dial for an Internet connection.
Once that problem is solved, then I will tackle ICS for the HTPC to supply the internet access for the Laptop.
I am NOT interested in buying more hardware at this time, a solution that is offered most of the time I have read in past messages.
A 633 error occurs every time I request to be connected to the Internet.
"Error 633 Modem Is Already in Use or not configured correctly."
HyperTerminal will cause the modem to dial every time. "USR 56K External Fax Speaker Phone Modem"
I am sure that the problem is with devices that are not really removed when you uninstall them, mainly in this case a gaggle of network bridges and some 1394 and wireless devices.
I have seen this remembering of uninstalled devices before and have been somewhat successful in removing them.
My Laptop current Bridge is "Network Bridge (Network Bridge) 11" so there are ten
that came before that are still being remembered.
I do not currently have a network bridge showing up on the HTPC, there are maybe 25 or more there.
They cannot be removed by uninstalling the devices (Show Hidden ON) using device manager are they are reported to be needed to start XP.
This is even true in "SAFE" mode.
Also, "Local Area Connection 6", "Wireless Network Connection 2" and "1394 Connection 2" on the laptop.
The Modem is working just fine on the Laptop, I am using it to send this message.
I would like to clean up the Laptop, but as everything is working even with the extra 10 bridges,
the HTPC which will not dial is a candidate
for one of these fixes.
---------------------------------------
1. Do an "REPAIR" install of WIN XP SP2.
This will retain the apps that I have installed but will require
installing all the critical fixes since XP2 was released.2. Revert to the image saved just after XP was activated.
This will retain most of the critical fixes since XP SP2 was released,
but all the apps will need to be reinstalled.3. Edit the registry to remove the remembered devices.
As I have not yet found the description of what is remembered and where
in the registry, this is prone to failure.
In addition it may not be possible to eliminate the 633 errors with
this effort and may cause problems that will only show up later.4. __________________________ To be informed on the correct way to reset network devices and build a clean set of network connections.
---------------------------------------
I hope someone can supply #4 and / or confirm that #1 will clean up this mess.
Thanks -- Stephen H. Fischer
