Re: Printer Sharing

Mal,
1. Be aware that when you get this HP All-in-One network, there is a good chance that the Scanning and Copying function will not be available to the networked PC's. These functions for the Printer may only be available to the PC that the printer is connected to.

2. On the PC that the Printer is connected to.
Start button> Printer & Faxes> Right click the Printer> Sharing> Make sure it is set to be shared over a network. Also make sure that the Printer's Share name is less than 12 characters long, and that there are no spaces in the name.

3. On all the XP machines> Control Panel> Security> Firewall settings> Exception tab> Check box for File and Printer Sharing. If you are using a third party firewall program, make sure file and printer sharing is enabled.

4. On the W98 machine.
a. Install all appropriate printer driver and software for W98. As I said earlier, many All-in-One features cannot be networked.
b. With the Printer turned on from the XP machine. Go to Control Panel> Printers> Delete the Icon for the HP printer listed there.
c. Then select to Add a Printer> Follow instructions in the set-up wizard> Browse through your network to the Printer> And Add it. Reboot PC, and run test from W98 PC.

I found it easier to do steps 4b & 4c, when setting up a networked printer, than trying to fiddle with changing names of the printer. I use this method for connecting a printer to XP machines also. Some may say that is unnecessary, but it has worked with me.

The idea was to see if I could network a printer I already have i.e. the
HP. Currently the 98SE computer has an Epson (USB) printer installed
which works OK but I want to get rid of it and use only one printer. The
HP is an all-in-one printer and it`s the one I want to use.
