Amit,
OK, I'm seeing the picture. What you're doing is similar to everybody here who
wants to carry their office computer home, connect it to the home LAN, and share
files etc between the two. The only difference is that you don't have a home
LAN - just a single computer. Except when you want to connect the laptop.
My serious recommendation is that you forgo the use of a crossover cable, and
the nuisance of setting up both computers to use one, and get a router (if you
don't already have one) at home, and use it to connect the two computers. You
can get a simple NAT router at places like Walmart and Radio Shack, for
instance, for about the price of 1 or 2 months of Internet access.
I have written an article which summarises the issues involved in moving a
computer from one network to another. Please read this article, and think about
each issue. Taking any computer from a work environment to a home environment
can be tricky, and if done improperly, can negatively affect its performance
when it is returned to the workplace.

If this solution is one which you've considered, and rejected, my apologies for
bringing it up again. But I think, in the long run, that this is a good place
to start.
