Under Local Area Connection - Properties - Configure button, you get the wizard
for the Ethernet card. Under Power Management, is "Allow the computer to turn
this device off to save power" checked?

Also, when this happens again, try opening a command window (Start - Run -
"cmd"), and type two commands, one after the other:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
