Network works only one direction

Greetings

Thanks for your help. I've gone through multiple forum pages as well
as Chuck's blog and two pages of Google sites for their suggestions on
what to do. I have 2 computers, both running XP Pro. They are
connected by a router with a hardware firewall. The computer's
firewalls are turned off. The Main-comp is a desktop that is cabled to
the wireless router. It can see, access and transfer files from my
laptop. TIT has all the settings as the master browser enabled. I've
checked the registry files suggested (in LSA) as well as the TCP/IP
settings

It has the following browstat reading.

Status for domain HOME on transport \Device\NwlnkNb
Browsing is active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus. Using
\\MAIN-COMP
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master MAIN-COMP
\\MAIN-COMP

Browsing is active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus. Using
\\MAIN-COMP
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master MAIN-COMP
\\MAIN-COMP
Unable to retrieve server list from MAIN-COMP: 53

Status for domain HOME on transport \Device\NwlnkIpx

\\MAIN-COMP
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master MAIN-COMP
\\MAIN-COMP

My laptop on the other hand gets the dreaded can't access the network
message with the addition that the network address isn't correct. I've
turned off the master browser control in the Control Panel on this
machine as suggested in Chuck's article on browser conflicts. I've
also checked the other registry values as well as services in the
Control Panel that were listed. I am able to ping the main computer
both by IP address and by name. This is what I get with browstat on my
laptop.

Status for domain HOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{E43DC084-71B2-45FB-98AB-F1B293686B4C}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: ????
Could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine
build of browser master: 53
Unable to determine server information for browser master: 123
1 backup servers retrieved from master ????
\\MAIN-COMP
Unable to retrieve server list from ????: 2351

I had a friend who is a computer network guy at the hospital I work at
try to solve this for 5 hours with no luck. I'm out of ideas. Any
help is appreciated.
