No internet connection after format/reinstall

I formatted my desktop computer's hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home
today. Once the reinstall was complete, I was no longer able to connect to
the internet. My internet connection is a cable modem, connected to a
router. The router is connected to two computers - a laptop (the one I am
using now), and the aforementioned desktop computer.
Because this problem occured after I formatted the hard drive, I am
suspecting the problem is a software issue regarding one or more networking
components. Looking at the device manager on the desktop, there are two
apparently relevant devices which are not properly installed: 1) Texas
Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller; and 2) Ethernet
Controller. The 1394 Net Adaptor (a separate device) appears to be properly
installed.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thank you for your help.
