Repair LAN connection

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

OK -- overnight again I could not get an immediate connection. I had to
reboot. Here is my question -- does the Internet Gateway have to be running
in order to use the router? How do I enable it. Is it a router
configuration?

I am open to other suggestions.
