LAN problem

I experience a weird problem on one of my computers. Suddenly I found that
internet response was terribly slow. I tested by pinging the router and found
that one in two packages was lost (on a ethernet cable connection of just a
few meters). Restart of computer and router did not help. The repair command
resulted in "no or limited connection". In the help files this is considered
a network problem, so I switched cables with a neighbouring computer, which
worked fine. I concluded that the cable and router are fine. So I suspected
the on-board LAN port. To test that I inserted a separate LAN card, but with
the same effect. Assuming that it is unlikely that two ports fail at the same
time, I assumed that it was a problem in the core network software and
decided to reinstall XP and the mainboard drivers. But the problem still
exists.
The symptoms in short are:
- some packages lost when pinging
- disconnecting/reconnecting a cable may lead to the message "no or limited
access" and an IP address in the 169.254.x.y. range rather than 192.168.x.y
or the reconnection may not be noticed at all. This happens both at the
on-board LAN port as on the PCI LAN card.
- reinstall of XP did not change the situation.
I am running out of clues. Has anybody a suggestion? Is this a mainboard HW
failure? Any suggestion is welcome.
