Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Ok, where do I begin? I have SBC DSL service coming through a SpeedStream
5100 DSL modem. From there I am going to an older SMC Barrier 7004VBR router.
Then I have one direct ethernet going from port 1 on the router to a desktop
and port 2 is going to a wireless access point for a laptop.

I could get it working, but it would not be consistent. It would always
eventually stop working. So I read on some SBC forums to set up the modem
under bridged instead of PPPoE on the Modem. I now have my username and
password set on my router, and it does connect to the internet. The laptop
will connect through the wireless access point fine and get on the net.

The desktop however seems to be the main problem. Whenever I attemp to
connect to the router, it will never grab an IP. It just constantly says
"acquiring address" but eventually times out. It does the same with the DSL
modem when directly connected to it. It won't grab an IP or even see the
modem on the network.

I can assign an IP to the desktop adapter and it will then see and connect
to the DSL modem. But when I put the modem back on the router and connect the
desktop to the router, it won't work. If I give the desktop an IP in the
correct range of the router's it will say its connected, but I cannot ping
the router. If, with the IP assigned" I try to repair the network connection,
it will release, renew and everything else, but it brings up an error at the
end saying it cannot register with the DNS server. I have tried using the
router address, the modem address and the DNS server addresses SBC uses in
the properties, but I still get the same error.

To complicate matters, sometimes when the desktop is connected to the router
and trying to access it, the laptop cannot access the router. It won't renew
its ip either. Not until I dissconnect the desktop from the router will it
work.

Right now I have both the desktop and laptop connected to the net. The
laptop is auto from the DHCP and the desktop has an assigned IP. They will
not, however see each other on the network. I have made sure there are no
firewalls on any of the connections. Both are sharing. Now the laptop will
show the desktop's name on the workgroup, but when I try to access it, I get
a "you don't have permission" error.

I have since bought a new network adapter for the desktop and installed it,
thinking the old one was going out. I still get the same problem with
connecting. Even when the desktop is connected to the router by itself it
will not see it or grab an ip even though I'm getting a connection light. It
just keeps trying to acquire network address. I have also changed out chords.

I thought of replacing the router, but my laptop connects to it fine.....
when the desktop isn't trying to get an ip from it.
