Dial-up connection fails/disabled after Win XP Upgrade/repair

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi,

I have Win XP Pro with SP2 and all latest upgrades
(including Outlook Express upgrades).

My Windows started behaving badly (Task Manager
window often doesn't have buttons or a Window frame),
sometimes it gets very very slow,
so I decided to "Repair/Upgrade" Windows.

I only have Win XP Pro CD which is 3 yrs old [no SP2],
it complained that I was trying to install an older version.
Never mind, I tried to boot from that CD and it was OK,
but during "Component Registration" it failed twice
[c:\windows\system32\inetcomm.dll and one
of Outlook Express DLLs - An error occured loading the file.
File may not have been loaded or has been corrupted]

I suspect it happened because I upgraded my Outlook Express
with latest upgrades, and original XP didn't like it.

I think, the problem is that these files were upgraded
and something in it doesn't match what the regular XP Pro
expects (file size, checksum or some properties).

I tried to copy all files of that kind inet*.*
and all outlook folder from my laptop, but it still shows error.

As a result, dial-up fails to install,
I can't create a new Dial-up connection [only Broadband option is enabled,
but I only have dial-up].

The other option for me would be to just totally reinstall
Windows XP Pro, but it will take couple of days to reinstall
all the software [I am afraid to loose something in a hurry,
as it was last time - it wiped out all my photos :( ]

What would you recommend ?

Thank you,
Oleg.
