Why won't my static TCP/IP settings stick? (XP SP2)

I had a struggle this weekend getting drivers for a dlink gigabit Ethernet
adapter installed. Finally, I thought everything was fine, except now I
notice that whatever changes I make to TCP/IP properties for any network
adapter are not saved. I can specify manual settings for static IP, gateway,
etc. And they do seem to be applied as indicated both by working connections
and reported by IPCONFIG /ALL. However, when I go pack to the TCP/IP
properties of any adapter, the custom settings are gone and they are set
back to obtain everything automatically. Things continue to work fine until
I reboot the computer, at which point the obtain everything automatically
settings go back into effect and the connections get screwed up because the
adapters try to go through DHCP instead of the static IPs I need.
I tried this command "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" as suggested in
one of the knowledge base articles but it didn't help.
I'm stumped.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
