Hello all,
I have a problem that has been mystifying me for some time, and I wondered
if the knowledgeable windows gurus here might be able to help me out.
I have a notebook (hereafter Notebook) running Windows XP Pro, SP2. I also
have a desktop (hereafter Desktop) in my office running Debian Linux.
Desktop is where I do most of my work, and my work files have been stored
there for years. Notebook is a relatively recent acquisition. When I got
it I was pleasantly surprised to find the nice 'make files available
offline' utility. This allows me (for those who don't know) to put my work
files on a network drive, and have Notebook automatically synchronise them
whenever it is plugged into the network with Desktop.
The Problem:
For some time now, the offline files utility has been behaving oddly. When
I edit a file offline on Notebook (see above) then reconnect to the network
I get an error message for each edited file which reads as follows:
Offline Files (\\Desktop\ShareName on Desktop): Access to 'ModifiedFile.txt'
is denied on \\Desktop\ShareName\path\to\directory\containing\file
This appears in a dialogue box headed 'Synchronization Complete'.
The System:
Desktop runs Debian Testing Linux. The files on Desktop are shared via
samba 3.0.10-1.
Notebook is a Dell Inspiron 5100 running Windows XP Pro, with Service Pack 2
and all recent updates. I also have a firewall (sygate personal) and virus
checking program prescribed by my University. Neither of these programs
seems to make a difference, and the problem persists when they are turned
off.
The computers are networked together via ethernet.
Attempts to find a solution:
I have played endlessly with samba settings to no avail.
Microsoft Knowledge Base turns up a blank.
I can find one post on Usenet, but the solution reported (upgrading Samba)
does not work in my case. That post is here:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/linux.samba/browse_thread/thread/c5b7dbc335ccf29f/28653201f5758f78?q=samba++%22offline+files%22&_done=%2Fgroups%3Fq%3Dsamba++%22offline+files%22%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26c2coff%3D1%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg%26&_doneTitle=Back+to+Search&&d#28653201f5758f78
Attempts to find a workaround:
Sometimes I can get a file to sync up by renaming the file on Desktop and
resynchronising (fooling Offline Files into thinking that the file was
deleted). Sometimes, however, this doesn't work and I still get the
'access denied' message for an apparently non-existent file. When this
happens, the only work-around I can find is to disconnect Notebook from the
network, copy the offending file somewhere else, reconnect and
resynchronise, and then copy the file back to its original location: a
cumbersome process.
Conclusions:
I would really like to find a solution to this problem. This is such a
great utility, it's a pity it seems to fail in my case. I would really
appreciate it if those of you wise in the Ways of Windows could help me
out.
