I've been having problems with my desktop for the past week. Several of
my services were somehow blocked, so my themes were not functioning and
somewhere along the way my Network Connections folder became empty.
Usually, inside my Network Connections, it has three files: 1394 Adapter, a
Wireless Connection, and a Dial-up Modem. I always have the Dial-up Modem off
and use the first two (I use a wireless USB adapter to connect to another
computer, which has cable.) However, all three are now gone.
When I look under Device Manager, 1394 Adapter, Instant Wireless USB Network
Adapter ver. 2.6, and Intel (R) PRO/100 Network Connection are all there and
functioning properly.
When I select "set up a home or small office network" it says "the following
devices are disconnected" and shows the Intel Network Connection and Wireless
Network Adapter. I usually say "ignore disconnected hardware" and move on.
After typing in the Computer Name, Computer Description, and Network Name it
would say "Wizard could not be completed" and told me to try again with
different options or do it manually. I don't know how to do it manually, so I
tried again. It still didn't work.
Two days after the start of the problem, it actually went through to the end
and said it was finished, but there is still nothing in the connections
folder, there is still nothing in the My Network Places folder, and I am
still not connected to the internet.
I have tried disabling the network adapters and enabling them again but that
did nothing. I uninstalled the Wireless USB adapter and reinstalled it, but
that also did nothing. The drivers for these adapters are all up-to-date
(checked via the Drivers CD provided).
My main question is this: How do I get the 1394 Adapter and Wireless Adapter
back into my Network Connections folder?
(By the way: my operating system is a Windows XP with SP1. The computer
itself is a 2003 Gateway Desktop. I have contacted the Gateway technicians,
but they have not been able to resolve the problem.)
I appreciate your time!
