Hi there,
Before attempting to share files, check to see if you are able to ping the
computers in first place. The firewalls may be blocking the home network
traffic, therefore, in case you have sp2 installed on your XP computers,
then here is what you can do to configure the Windows firewall for home
network:
1. Click Start, run, type "firewall.cpl" (with out quotation marks) and
click OK.
2. In the resulting window, under the Advanced tab, place a check mark next
to the "Local area connection"
3. Click OK.

With regard to the remote desktop connection, go to the router settings page
and open ports for remote desktop connection program, TCP port 3389 needs to
be opened using the port forwarding, for more information, see here:
