Problem computer details:
Gigabyte 8KNXP Rev 2.0 w/- on board Intel Pro/1000 CT network card. XP Pro
SP2. Router is a Netgear FR114P
The first indication of the problem is when one main switch turns on the
whole system. The router goes through its normal test and the appropriate
lights are lit except for the Gigabyte where only the link light is lit - not
the 100. If at this stage I swap the cable to another port both lights are
lit. If I don't swap the cables and power up the Gigabyte the other light
goes out and remains out and swapping cables to other ports will not activate
either lights. In this scenario the only fix is to shut down the Gigabyte,
switch off its power and switch it back on. With this sequence, or the port
swap before boot, both lights remain on, the Gigabyte is booted and I am able
to connect normally to the internet.
After approx 1-2 minutes after booting and the internet connection is fine
at that stage, the local area connection icon starts intermittently changing
from “A network cable is unplugged” to “Intel Pro/1000 CT connected.” This
changing will continue for approx. 30 seconds until both link and 100 lights
go out and a reboot is required as per above. If however within that 30
seconds I go into network connections, right click on the Intel LAC, click
repair once or twice it sometimes fixes the problem or disable and enable
sometimes helps.
Everything remains stable after the above is sorted for as long as the
computer is operating 1hour or 1 week including shut down, power off then on
and rebooting. This problem only occurs and always occurs if the power is
switched to the router.
I have for a while used an SMC USB Ethernet Adapter Model SMC2206USB/ETH and
I do not experience these repeated disconnections
The other computer on the system (running XP Home SP2) has not experienced
this problem and is not affected during these disconnections.
Apart from the details above I would like to make a note the following:
1. When one computer is logged onto the net the other computer whilst not
logged on can still access the internet. Either machine does this. Is this
standard?
2. When both computers are connected independently to the net, if one is
then disconnected the other will be automatically disconnected also and a
reconnection will be necessary. Is this standard?
3. The LAC Icon in the system tray always has a status of: Acquiring network
address.
4. The Network Diagnostic through Help and Support comes up with the
following failure:
For direct connection (no router), through router via the onboard Intel
Pro/1000 CT or the SMC USB all have these failures:
DNSServerSearchOrder (FAILED)
