I'm having a similar problem. I've followed Carey's directions, and they
did not solve the problem.
My desktop runs XP Home, V5.1, SP 2. When I try to share folders or my
printer from the desktop, the error I get is "An error occurred while trying
to share the folder. The server service has not started".
When I try to share the printer, the error message is: "Printer settings
could not be saved. The operation could not be completed".
I don't have a firewall installed. Both my desktop and laptop can access
the internet, but they can't share files or the printer. The two machines
can ping each other.
