Is there a user account on the Win2k machine that is identical to one on the
XP Pro box, same user name and password? If not, add one. Make sure that the
permissions on any shared resources allow this account access.

Note, it's not necessary for the account to be logged on to the other
machine for this to work. It just has to be present. I hope that makes
sense.

Did you turn off simple file sharing on the XP machine? If you did then the
same rule applies here, log on to XP with an accout that's identical to one
on the 2K machine.

Can you ping one machine from the other? Start -> Run -> cmd.exe -> ping
LAPTOP or ping DESKTOP (just substitute the correct names).

What if anything is showing up in My Network Places?

Are any error messages being displayed when you attempt to connect? If so,
post them here.

Have you ruled out any problems with network cards or your crossover cable?
Start -> Run -> ping localhost. At least find out if your cards are OK.

Are your IP settings OK? Start -> Run -> ipconfig /all. See if the numbers
check out OK.

It's usually a good idea to reboot a machine whenever you make changes that
could effect network access. Also, whenever you change settings that are
related to user accounts they won't take effect until that user logs off and
back on.
