Just installed a Netgear DG834G wireless modem/router with CAT 5 only
and everything appears to be working fine.
However, I've noticed two (what I think are) rather odd behaviours on
my PC.
1. With Zonealarm unlocked there is constant activity on both the red
and green icon bars in my system tray.
2. When I engage the Zonealarm internet lock the upstream light on my
Windows Internet Connection icon (in the system tray) stays lit all
the time - as if data is being uploaded to 'somewhere'.
I also have NTL cable and can swich connections quickly to compare.
But the behaviours described above do not happen with NTL (using
different equipment naturally). So, I am wondering if there's
something odd about the DG834G, the way I've set it up, or my ISP.
On ADSL Zonealarm reports that the Generic Host Process for Win32
Services keeps trying to access the net - causing the lights to flash
presumably. But I do not get this problem on my NTL cable connection.
Only using ADSL.
Alternatively, is what I'm seeing merely a quirk of ADSL, as opposed
to cable internet? Copper pair versus fibre optics.
Incidentally I have checked the PC for spyware and viruses. Comes up
clean.
Ideas most welcome.
