Arnold,

on the web you can find everything recommended. There are good
and bad recommendations.

The point behind recommending a second transport protocol is
actually a bit tricky. Why people recommend NetBEUI instead of
the included IPX protocol eludes me entirely, but the reason why
a second protocol is recommended is this.

Somebody had problems with TCP/IP, couldn't get it to work on
the LAN. So he tried to install IPX on top, and that worked.
Instead of solving the problem, the person now recommends a
crude workaround.

There is another point to the second protocol. In some very
specific situations it does actually make sense to install a
different transport protocol, namely when you get IP addresses
from your ISP that are not in the same reserved subnet. In that
case installing IPX is one way out of the problem.

Yet another is that some older network games run only on IPX.

But the MVPs at least agree that installing a second transport
protocol is normally not recommendable and certainly not
necessary for most installations.
