I enjoy challenges like yours - they make me have to think.

File sharing between computers running XP Home is pretty simple. All you need
for permission is to enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type
"net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. Assuming that no firewalls
are involved, anyway.

The articles that I mentioned should give you more information. Or post back
here.

Generally, scanners are not networkable, so they will not show up on a list of
networked shares. We have questions here periodically about using a scanner on
the network - and the general answer is that it's not possible. Home office
scanners are generally not designed for network use - you have to go to the
scanner to power it on and load it, do you then want to go back to your computer
to run the scan?
