XP Network: Ping Conundrum

I have a Pentium III laptop running XP Professional (not yet upgraded to
Service Pack 2) and an almost new Sony VAIO Desktop running XP Home with
Service Pack 2 installed. Both are wirelessly connected to the internet,
working without problem using DHCP.

I've been trying for many hours to get file sharing to work between the two
(nothing new here, I realize.)

Yes, I've run the Network Setup Wizard multiple times, and, of course, I
then get the message that the workgroup I'm seeking to connect to is
unavailable or that I don't have suitable access privileges (both machines
variously give such messages, even though, tantalizingly, I can sometimes see
the other machine from My Network Places). I've switched off the Windows
firewall on both machines.

Ironically, I can quickly and easily connect to my wife's Macintosh and
share files with it from either machine; just not between the two PCs.

Here's the conundrum (which I'm guessing is a contributor to the problem,
even if it's not the only factor): in my attempts to wrestle this to ground I
discover that I cannot ping the newer VAIO. The loopback ping 127.0.0.1 works
just fine, but I cannot ping the machine's IP address either from itself or
from the laptop. It's working fine in all other respects, and the laptop
pings perfectly.

Is this germane? What are the blindingly obvious steps I've missed? Should I
throw in the towel and buy iMacs instead? Meanwhile, assistance in keeping
some of my hair will be much appreciated and much thanked.
