Thanks for the tips... I gave them a go but still have problems. Here's the
latest:

I can't connect to get the latest Service Packs, although I was current
before installing & then uninstalling SP2.

Network Diagnostics report that the URLs to connect Outlook Express Mail and
News failed. They also report that one of the two DNS servers Failed
(however I can ping both of them.)

I assigned a static IP and *can* ping the DHCP server and any other IP
address.

*** What's weird is that I get some garbage on the screen with the results
of a ping command! ***

For example, after I do a ping, the first line returned says "Pinging ! with
32 bytes of data" where "!" is a triangle. At the end of the ping info, the
line that says "Ping statistics for !" has some funky characters for "!".
This makes me think something is corrupt in this portion of XP.

I can only ping an IP address and not the URL (e.g., can ping 216.109.118.69
but cannot ping www.yahoo.com).

I repaired the connection and upgraded the driver for the NIC - no change.
Also did a netsh int ip reset but no change there either.

Is there a way I can reinstall the files XP Home uses for networking? Is
that a logical next step?

Thanks,

Steve
