This may be of help to others that get the same or
similar problems related to XP service pack 2.
This was my second machine to go to SP2 .. there were no
problems with the first upgrade. After SP2 you are
prompted to check various security stuff including the
status of firewalls. When I went to Network Connections
the icons for the two ethernet cards (where you set on
the firewall) were not there. I eventually found
reference to them under the device manager but only after
using the "show hidden devices" option. "Plan A" was to
delete the devices and remove the cards forcing them to
be re-recognised. It turned out that the cards were not
just hidden but also protected from being uninstalled
with a message about perhaps being required at boot
time. Catch 22. "Plan B" was to de install SP2 which
went pretty smoothly except for error messages that
firewall.cpl was not found. Unfortunately the hidden and
protected status of the NIC cards was not reversed by the
de-install. Hacking the registry seened a bit of a
long shot so thank goodness for WIN/XP System Restore
provided a "Plan C" which finally got me back to a sytem
where I can see and configure my NICs. Thanks for the
hints from a few people with similar problems elsewhere
in this list. cheers Mike
