Can you elaborate on what you are trying to do with regards to "running the
LAN"?

I will guess that you are trying to do file sharing, printer sharing etc...
To do this, you will need to open the appropriate ports in the firewalls on
your systems. What ports that need to be opened will be dictated by what
you are trying to do.

As for whether your router is an adequate firewall is hard to say. You can
try and ping the router's public interface and see if you get a response.
If you do, go into the router configuration and disable ICMP Echo's and then
ping again, that will tell you if it is working.
