internet not working properly after sp2

I have a cable modem that was working fine until I
installed sp2 on XP. Now it will disconnect after 5 min.
and have to keep releasing and renewing. The only way
we have found it to work smoothly is by formatting and
reinstalling windows XP and having no updates at all on
the computer. This of course is unacceptable. I found a
site that had a similar problem but I would have to sign
up on an expert's sight to get the fix. I would
appreciate any help. My ISP has run out of options to
help me.
