I have a good knowledge of computers but not networks, especially the
way microsoft dictates things must occur. I'm eagerly awaiting apple
to finish their nteowrking project so you can connect computers
without having to do all the crap!
Anyway besides icrosoft peeving me to no end, i wonder if somebody can
help.
As I said i have little knowledge of networking and have bought a USB
wireless network adapter, which does the usual 54MBPS.
I have managed to get my laptop and desktop to both say the signal
strength is excellent but every time i use my laptop to try and use
the internet thats on my desktop, it brings up my dialup connection
asking me to connect to the net.
I have a dialup connection, which obviously i have dialed through my
desktop and sometimes use in my laptop, but for the purposes of when
im home i want my desktop to be on the net while my laptop access it,
so too all my drives.
I have aenabled other computers to use the internet option.. so thats
not it.
Do I need toset an IP address? I have tried adhoc mode.
I also want it so I have to log in every time i use my wireless so
others cant get in.
I used to run a crossover cable between the desktop and laptop for fil
and net sharing, and it worked although i didnt manage to find out how
to make you log in.
So all i wanted to do was remove the long cable in favour of wireless
but I'm finding now I may have to go to cable again. This is just
insane!
Desktop is XP Pro and lap is XP Home
Thanks for help!
