Sending mail stopped working

I can't send mail anymore from my XP machine. All the latest
patches from windows update are installed.
Doesn't matter which mail client I use.
I tried all the obvious stuff, disabling/uninstalling firewalls etc.
I assume it's some kind of smtp problem, since I e.g. can post in
newsgroups (which is nntp, right?) and receive mail (pop, imap).
Anyone got a clue?
