I spent some time at my sister-in-law's place yesterday trying to get
her home network up and running (2 WinXP Home computers). I had to do a
couple extra things to get DHCP operating and to get WEP to work.

Setup:
WGR614 (version 1) wireless access point
   WG511 notebook card in laptop
   1 Desktop wired to router
   Guest accounts enabled.
   DHCP enabled on router.
Open system (no WEP) set on router.

Thanks to Chuck, I checked ipconfig /all and fixed the Node Type on the
desktop from "Hybrid" to "Unknown"

This didn't work. Despite a strong signal, I couldn't get DHCP to work.
Unplugging power to the the router and plugging it back in fixed this.

Should this have been an obvious fix? I mean if the dang "Enable DHCP"
box is checked and it works with one computer, it should work with two
computers without repowering the router, right?

Next, I set a WEP key and lost connectivity again. After banging my head
against the wall, repowering the router and checking the key and router
settings for the umpteenth time, I updated the firmware on the router.

This got things operating just as they should. Even my own laptop
connected to the network slick as can be.

I'd like to meet those marketing guys that make it sound so easy to get
home networking up and running.
