I tried the suggestions here (thank you for those) but to no avail :-(
I ended up submitting to the Microsoft paid support and this did resolve
the problem. One thing I did not do and should have done, (prior to M$)
was to remove the PCCillin Av/firewall from within safe mode. As this
seemed to rectify the problem.
Reinstalling the firewall though, DOES prevent pinging othe pc's via ip or
name. This is the case even though I set the firewall to accept all ports
from all pc's in the 192.168.0.xxx range. Explorer could see/use the other
pcs even though they could not be pinged. There may be an option/setting
for the firewall to allow pinging, though I not seen it.
So thank you again for your suggestions. I did learn from them :D
