Hi Steve,
This is a common networking problem in XP. Try
the following steps:
Check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or
disabled. With XP Pro, you need to have the SFS settings
properly set on each computer. With XP Pro, if SFS is
disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security
Options, look at "Network access: Sharing and security
model", and ensure it's set to "Classic - local users
authenticate as themselves".
With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy
to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest account is
enabled, through Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), and has an identical, non-blank,
password on all computers. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank,
password on all computers.
For XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, through Local User
Manager (Start - Run - "lusrmgr.msc"), on each computer.
Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or
third party)? If so, you need to configure them for file
sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138,
445, and / or by identifying the other computers as
present in the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall
configurations are a very common cause of (network)
browser, and file sharing, problems.
Let me know if you need any further assistance, Luke.

>Help: I am trying to set up a small network with my
desktop and my Laptop. Both computers use Windows XP Pro.
I select the option to create a network and run the
Network Wixard. I create the network disk and the set up
Wizard tell me that I have successfully set up a small
network on the first computer. I run the setup disc in
the laptop again using the wizard and it once again tells
me that I have successfully set up a small network.. At
the end of this I am unable to see the other computer.
When I go to Network places I only see the computer I am
on.

>My Connections are as follows. The internet enters the
cable modem. From the modemthe signal enters my hub. from
the hub one cable connects to my desktop and one connects
to my laptop. The radio button that I choose when the
wizard is running is the one that says that I am
connecting through a residential gateway. I have been
trting now for four days to set this up and would
appreciate any assistance which would help me.
