Okay, I'm pretty new to Windows and use a Linksys Wireless router and a Mac
as my main workstation. No problems with the Mac, but XP is a bit touchier.
Tech support for a few software companies and Linksys have told me in no
uncertain terms to turn off XP's internal firewall. I am NOT using sharing
being hosted on the XP, so I have Allow other users to connect to or use
this computer turned OFF as well, or unchecked.

I started running into a problem with dropped connections and the idiot at
Linksys tech told me to turn off my firewall inside my Linksys router - Doh!
So much for tech support from India. Yes, my wireless worked with the
firewall off, but that is a lame way of solving the problem. I now have a
good connection [ but it only travels 50 feet or so], WEP 64 bit security
and the Firewall turned on.

I am wondering what I need to do to secure my XP from prying eyes or people
looking for hotspots? I notice at times my laptop xp picks up someone else's
wireless signal in the area, which appears to be encrypted
[][][][][][][]=[][][][] and looks like that. When that happens I sometimes
get booted from my own network.

Basically I just don't want anyone to use my hotspot or be able to use my
network or easily cop my signal from my laptop.

Am I doing enough? What to I need to do?
And finally, does anyone know how a signal booster for my wireless [Linksys
now makes one] would work with this security setup, and/or if it works well.
I want to be able to get a signal from my basement to my office on the
second floor. Direct distance about 75 feet diagonally I think.

TIA,

Jeff
