Slow web browsing

Two networked PCs connected via a switch, accessing the 'net through a
DSL router. Both running XP Pro SP1 + up to date with patches/hotfixes.

One machine works fine. The other worked fine too until about a week
ago, now it is painfully slow (like being on a 28.8 modem) - but _only_
when using a browser, any browser (IE6, NS4.7, Firefox). Everything else
works normally; e-mail, updating apps (Acrobat Reader, AdAware, Windows
Update, etc.) all run at normal speed, as does LAN activity (file
copying etc.).

FTP using a browser is also slow, but running it from the command line
is OK.

Everything I've found using Google seems to be about overall poor
network speed, or general internet slowness, nothing that matches these
symptons exactly.

I've run AdAware and Spybot, deleting anything they found (and
rebooted), and NAV finds nothing. HijackThis finds nothing suspicious.
Also there is no suspicious network activity or processes running.

Now I'm stumped. I'm convinced that there is something malicious
installed on this PC (possibly redirecting HTTP requests?) but I can't
find it :-(

Anyone suggest what may be the cause and/or where to look next?

TIA.

Regards,

Parish
