Hi
I have a so far inexplicable problem with a single XP Pro client PC on an
NT4 SP6a server/XP Pro client network. The network is set up as a workgroup
with 12 client machines, and the affected PC has an unshared ADSL internet
connection which has to be "dialled up", so to speak, before the connection
is made. Whenever the internet connection is active, browsing the LAN via My
Network Places is very slow, and sometimes results in either a
username/password prompt to access the share (the username displayed is
always the one for the internet connection; using the workgroup username and
password instead grants the access), or an Access Denied message. As soon as
the internet connection is closed the LAN browsing and access return to
normal. The affected shares are all on the server; there are a couple of
client-to-client shares but these seem to be unaffected.
It seems as though the network browser is trying to look on the internet for
the requested resource rather than on the LAN; if this is so, how can I
modify this behaviour?
However, desktop shortcuts to network shares seem to be largely unaffected,
though slightly slower than usual when the internet connection is active,
and occasionally the shortcut fails; when this happens, a second attempt is
often successful.
This internet connection has the Windows XP firewall enabled, but the
problem is present whether or not the firewall is enabled. The LAN
connection is not firewalled. The Master Browser setting in the registry is
set to FALSE.
Every other client can access the LAN without problems.
What have I missed?
