Up to this point, everything is working fine: files, folders, partitions, etc. However, we have "evolved" to the point where we need to secure certain folders and grant permissions to everyone accessing the fileserver. With a server, this would be comparatively easy. However, in all my manipulating of policies, users, groups and such, I have not come up with a way to remotely secure specific "net shares" for our users at varying administrative levels.

Win XP Pro is a client operating system, so it can't do everything
that a server operating system can (e.g. store user profiles on the
server, control/validate all network access between other computers).

However, it can control/validate access to shared folders on the local
computer, so it should be able to do what you want, provided that:

1. All of the shared folders are stored on the Win XP Pro computer.

2. You create a unique, passworded user account on Win XP Pro for each
person who uses any computer on the network.

Here's how:

1. Have each person use his/her unique user account and password
whenever logging onto any computer on the network.

2. Disable simple file sharing on XP Pro:

   a. Open My Computer and click Tools | Folder Options | View.
   b. Scroll to the end of the advanced settings.
   c. Un-check "Use simple file sharing (recommended).

3. Set permissions on shared folders to allow access by the desired
users. Ron Lowe and I have written a web page showing how to do it:
