Onboard network cards not working

Hello,

I have two networked computers and cannot get them connected through the two
onboard network cards they have. I have had to put my 2 old network cards
in to get them connected. Is there any reason why the onboard ones don't
work but my other LAN cards do?

I am able to connect them both wirelessly with my wireless router (but the
connection is slow). Windows XP says the two onboard cards are 400Mbps, so
I much rather have them working. Before I had put the old LAN cards in XP
showed up that there were 2 network connection (plus the wireless
connection) in My Network Places. Why is this when I only have 1 onboard
connection on each computer?

I have tried many settings and many trouble-shooting techniques to get the
onboard connections to work (several different cables, such as cross-over
and standard, several settings such as static IPs or auto-IPs, with my
firewall software disabled and even uninstalled, with my AV software
disabled, with my wireless connection disabled, etc.) but nothing seems to
help.

They seem to be enabled in the BIOS, but there appears to be no light on
either connection on the back of the machines. My router is on 192.168.1.1,
but I have tried IPs such as 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.1.2 for the
connections. I have set the WINS option to all 3 options (changing ALL the
connections to the same setting each time). My wireless connection on seems
to work when I select Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP though.

I've run out of ideas, can anyone help?

Also, how does XP prioritise connections when you have a wireless and
standard connection? When I disable my LAN connection all transferring to
my other computer goes through the wireless connection. But when I
re-enable the LAN connection transfers don't seem to revert back to the LAN
connection?
