Connectivity Problems

I've been having trouble keeping my internet connection
open. It seems that my computer continually drops the
connection. It doesn't matter whether I'm using dial-up
or cable modem.
Scenario 1: I'll be connected to the internet, surfing
pages. Then, the connection will disappear. (I get
a "page cannot be displayed" error message in Internet
Explorer when I click on a link, bookmark, etc.)
Scenario 2: I connect to .net (either using MSN Messenger
or Windows Messenger.) Then, for no apparent reason,
Messenger will show that I am no longer connected.
I'm running Windows XP Pro, but I can't tell if it's a
problem with XP or with the IBM Thinkpad I'm using.
