I have an internet connection ISDN which uses the USB on the Host and I can not connect the router to the modem as I am told this will destroy the D-Link router becasue of power differences. I have been told that all though the router is not designed to accomodate a dial up internet connection that it is still possible to allow the wireless Laptop access to the internet through the host but so far I have had no luck with this. I can send a print command from the Laptop which works through the Host to the printer, and I do get the connections appearing on each system when they are both on. I have disabled the anti virus, firewall and ICS on the Laptop, also enabled ICS on the Internet connection and made certain that

I do also get what i believe is a Gateway appearing when the two systems are running and I have no idea what to select or if to select any of the choices listed in settings for that connection, I have tried using ports 25, 110, & 80 but still no joy sharing the Internet.

I doubt that this is the only configuration that is creating conflict as I now also get a message telling me that the ICS cannot be set on the Internet connections settings due to another device having the same IP Address, this is only something that has occured through me fiddling with the settings as it didnt happen earlier but its got me beat. Does anyone have a clear way of explaining how to set something such as this up because both the manufacturer and the shop where I purchased this equipment tell me that all though it was designed for different connections it is still possible to set this up, but they also tell me they cant help me that it is likely that i will need a Network Engineer to
sort

There are two problems, Kaz:

1. The IP address conflict occurs because the router's LAN interface
uses the same 192.168.0.1 IP address that ICS assigns to the host
computer's LAN interface.

2. Since you'll be using ICS to share the ISDN connection, you need to
use the wireless router as a wireless access point only, bypassing its
router capability.

Here's the solution:

1. Disable ICS on the host computer.

2. Connect the host computer's LAN connection to one of the router's
LAN ports, not to its WAN (Internet) port.

3. Disable and then enable the host computer's LAN connection, so that
it gets an IP address from the router.

4. Connect to the router's built-in web server at http://192.168.0.1 .

5. Change the router's LAN IP address to a different one in the same
subnet, such as 192.168.0.254.

6. Disable the router's built-in DHCP server.

7. Reboot the router.

8. Enable ICS on the host computer, which will assign 192.168.0.1 to
the LAN connection.
