Alex,

Windows XP Home uses Simple File Sharing, where everything that is shared is
available to any users on the LAN.

Windows XP Pro will use either Simple File Sharing, or Advanced File Sharing.
AFS requires authentication by matching account / password. With AFS, you setup
a shared folder with permissions to an account on the sharing computer, and
access is granted to that same account (with identical password) logged in to a
remote computer.

If you wish to access all shares from all computers, then simply enable SFS
(Control Panel - Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) on each computer
with XP Pro.

If you wish to control access to shares on an XP Pro computer, then disable SFS.
If you disable SFS (enable account based authentication for shares access), it
gets tricky. With SFS (controlling how a computer grants access to its own
shares) disabled, there is a second setting that controls how that computer
authenticates for access to shares on other computers.

If you disable SFS on any XP Pro computer, check the Local Security Policy
(Control Panel - Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security
Options, look at "Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's
set to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers.
If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical, non-blank, password
on all computers.
