old user account preventing networking

Our office just got a new file server, running Windows
XPpro. We have a peer to peer network - 5 PCs and
network printer. Everyone accesses the file server for
Outlook psts and templates. The whole thing is a bit of
a mess, based on the fact most of the pcs only have
XPhome on them which creates a lot of problems on the
network. In addition, everyone has a user account on
every machine which were created ad hoc so no name was
standardised. We have put all the files in the shared
folder on the new server. We have had to create about 10
user accounts on the file server to accomodate the
different configurations of user names. It is a mess.
First question is there any way to turn off all these
names when the computer is switched on? We have one
central account called files which everyone uses so no
one logs on as any other.

Second question, things we have learned, that changing
the user name on the account doesn't change the
directory! An old account still keeps the same name in
explorer it had before so changing it to a named account
on the file server doesn't make any difference. We have
been importing and exporting profiles and deleting the
old to create new user accounts with the same settings as
the server to get around it but it is a pain. HOWEVER,
we deleted an account on one machine that had been
renamed and that person had been granted access via VPN.
The VPN connection had been deleted too. But we can't
get rid of the user name! We tried to create a new
account with that name and it says it already exists. It
is not in the directory anywhere, no user account shows,
XP home doesn't have a user list in computer management,
and we can't find it anywhere. I don't know if this is
making any sense but how do we get rid of it? When we
were copying profiles over on the machine, it shows up as
a profile on the "copy to" list, but not profiles on the
machine. As every other machine in the network had a
user account configured with his name, we then had to put
yet ANOTHER account on the file server with another name
just for that one machine. I am sure there is an easier
solution with security settings and such but XP is the
worst for networking. This was the only way around it.
Any suggestions? Thanks
