I added a gigabit switch (Linksys EG005W) and replaced my old network
cards with Hawking Technologies HGA32T 10/100/1000 NICs, and while
it's faster than I was getting it's not even 2x as fast as my 10/100
setup was.
The EG005W replaces the switch built into my Linksys wireless router.
I still share the Internet just like before, but now the gigabit
switch connects everything. 4GB files used to take around 8 minutes
to move between machines, now it's down to 5 minutes. The lights on
the switch indicates gigabit connections are established, so the
problem apparently lies in how they are used.
Reviews seem non-existant for the EG005W ($100), and the Hawking cards
($13 each) may or may not be good bargains, but since they function OK
I'd like to know what kind of registry changes might help. After
reading discussions of how a 32-bit PCI bus can't actually handle 10x
faster ethernet traffic, I'd settle for 5x faster to get the 4GB
transfer time down to under 2 minutes.
Any ideas, even some generic ethernet parameter stuff? I've tried
setting the cards properties to the maximum values, like Jumbo Frames
and 512 Tx and Rcv connections, but I don't know if maxing them out
was a *good* thing. If I could cut down packet collisions that might
help, but I can't find a definitive guide to WinXP networking that
discusses that issue.
And if the parts I picked aren't up to the job, advice on replacements
would be appreciated.
Thanks for any help you can give...
