You do not have to MAP the drive of the client PC to share or transfer
files.

The delay, as you found, goes away when you Delete the Mapped drive because
XP no longer has to search for something that isn't there!

: I wondering if I might find a workable solution for a situation I have.
I'm
: running WinXP Home on my desktop and laptop computer. I have a Linksys
: 4-point router setup so I can network my laptop with my desktop and share
: Internet Connection as well. I have mapped a drive on the desktop to a
: drive on the laptop. When the laptop is not connected and on (which is
: most of the time), I get sizeable delay (Not Responding) in Office 2003
: applications (Word, Excel and Frontpage 2002). The delay happens when I
: save a new document or use the Save As function and click on the "Save In"
: box to change folders. The delay is between 1-2 minutes each time.
: Eventually, the application will start again, but the delay is troubling.
:
: If I disconnect the drive in the desktop, then Office is back
: to normal. But, every time that I want to share between the laptop and
: desktop, I now have to re-map the drive.
:
: I've just got a new computer a few weeks ago and this happens on the new
: computer. I had the same setup on the old computer and did not have this
: problem. Both machine were running WinXP with all updates, and Office
: 2003. So, I'm still trying to figures out how to maintain the drive
: mapping without experiencing this delay. I would like to be able to just
: plug in the laptop as before and have all connections there!
:
: Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this issues. Appreciate all
input.
