Unable to share data but can share internet on xp pro

I'm totally new to networking but here the deal. I've
been messing with this for th last three days and finally
got the two computers to recognize that the other exists.
One is a custom built desktop and the other is a HP
pavilion ze5300 running winXP pro on both. Right now i
have it set up, this is the only way i could get it to
work as well as i have, as the lap top is connected to
the internet via ethernet cable and i have a USB to
Ethernet converter that connects the other computer, i
hade it the other way around earlier but it wouldn't
work. I just need to transfer data from the laptop to the
desktop. They are exchanging packets between themselves
and i can get onto the internet on the desktop via the
shared connection on the laptop but nothing shows up in
the "my network places" diectories. Also, in the
workgroup computers only the laptop will recognize the
desktop but i stil cannot access it. It gives me the
message that "[comp name] is not accessible. you might
not have permission to use this network resource. contact
the administrator of this server to find ut if you have
access permissions. The network path was not found." and
as for the desktop i cannot even get to view the
workgroup computers getting the message "Mshome is not
accessible. blah blah blah. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently availble" If anyone can help
me with this i would very much appreciate it, thank you.
