I've decided that it's time to dig deeper into Windows networking.
I often work on fixing LANs where the Windows operating systems vary from
one computer to the next.
Sometimes there's Windows 2000 Server in the mix.
Always there's Windows XP (either version) in the mix.
There are always Windows 98 and/or ME in the mix.
etc.

Often one computer can't see another. But, is this a permanent condition or
only temporary? Because my on-site time is limited, it's not good to have
to wait for all of the computers to figure out that they have peers or
whatever on the network just one more time! So, I need for recognition to
be swift in order to minimize delays while on-site.

I can imagine that *not* using DHCP could make a positive difference - but I
don't know. Static IP addresses are fine on small networks. But, does it
matter?

I know about:
http://www.wown.com/ World of Windows Networking

I recently came across:
http://grc.com/su-bondage.htm Shields Up!!
and I wonder if what's being said here is generally agreed or disputed?

I've read that NetBEUI is not needed at all. Yet the URL above suggests
that it should be used.

I know that I've been able to fix networks by adding NetBEUI - which seems
strange and counterproductive if it isn't recommended. But hey, I have to
get the job done and don't need to spend time experimenting with
theoretically "correct" configurations that don't work. So, the temptation
is there.....

How does the logon type selected affect things?

SO: Best book(s) for general mixed Windows networking?
    Information on the web?

Thanks,

Fred
