An odd problem. I have two desktops and a laptop all running XP
Professional. They are set up as a home network with one desktop
accessing the Internet via a dial-up connection. The three computers are
linked through a 5-point hub. The two desktops can share files and the
Internet connection. The laptop can only share files if it is given a
static IP address. If I set it to obtain an IP address automatically it
defaults to an address that is not compatible with the network. With the
fixed IP address the laptop cannot access the Internet through the home
network.

If I connect the laptop to my ISP through its modem it can login but I
still cannot browse the Internet. To test the hardware I booted the
laptop with a Linux Knoppix CD. I could then dial my ISP and browse the
Internet.

I have tried a repair installation but there was no change. Everything
is normal in device manager.

This is new. Everything was working until a week or two ago.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.
