Re: No sound after XP reinstall

Hello Janice

I am responding to your request as this is a common problem (no audio
after installing WinXp Sp3) usually involving onboard Realtek HD sound
drivers.

Lots of advice out there to resolve it, but don't address underlying
issues or actual cause. I am confident you are already well aware of
no-sound issues regarding Windows XP and SP-3. Not installing sound
card and drivers until very last resolves 99% of them.

Disable (if appropiate) on-board sound or do not insert/install your
sound card inside computer; installing sound drivers (now) is crux of
the problem.

Install (fresh) copy Windows XP. Do not install any audio drivers or
audio codecs. Do install motherboard chipset drivers, usb 2.0 drivers,
ethernet & network drivers and sata & raid drivers.

Install Windows SP-3. Reboot computer and install desired internet
browser. If possible, go to Windows Update and after activation &
validation process, install necessary updates and reboot computer.

Let Windows XP detect and install software for remaining devices.
Reboot computer and you should not have any unresolved (missing drivers)
yellow exclamation marks in device manager.

Turn computer off and (if appropiate) insert sound card. Restart
computer; go into bios (if appropiate) and enable on-board sound. Let
Windows detect and install necessary audio drivers and related software.
Reboot computer and hopefully you're done.

Realtek HD Audio WDM_R227 (Reaktek Website) installed everything needed
on my Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard w/o difficulty. Your particular
software package (installed now) should do the same.

This is necessary because Windows SP-3 can play havoc with sound
drivers. Sound drivers place files all over the place and the windows
registry is easily corrupted. No amount of disabling, uninstalling and
reinstalling sound drivers will repair a corrupted registry. Installing
sound drivers last minimizes this.

Good Luck
